Cape Hatteras Light Station

On our last camping trip to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina we visited the Cape Hatteras Light Station. Unfortunately we were there during the off season so the lighthouse wasn't open and we didn't get to climb up to the top.

We did however get to tour the light keepers house, which has been converted into a museum.

I loved walking through the house / museum.  I felt like I could live there!!! There was such a feeling about the house that I loved (despite all the historical information every where). I felt like it was a perfect spot to raise a family.

Our friend promised ice cream to all the kids that could run around the lighthouse. And run they did!!!

Just in case you can't read above...

"There have been words written to the effect that the lighthouse keepers and their families had a very lonely life; however, we did not have this experience.  In fact, just the opposite would be more apt to apply. The lighthouse was always a favorite place to visit by the village folk so we would have lots of company, especially on Sunday afternoons and the evening hours, when the heat of summer was unbearable in the wooded areas of the villages.  Swimming, baseball games, croquet, chasing wild horses and penning them in the yards for breaking to the saddle, and climbing the lighthouse were all a big part of our lives"

Rany Jennette, son of the last Principal Keeper at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

See I knew I could be a Keeper of a light house!!!!! That sounds perfect for me.  I bet I could even find time to knit and spin. Maybe I could keep some alpacas by the lighthouse to mow the grass.

I could see Tiny wrangling up some wild horses too.

I think Mr. B might want to help out too.

Summer Days

Thank you for all of your kind words about the passing of Harley. I appreciated each and every email and comment. They were all so touching. I love the connections I have made with so many wonderful people here through my Blog. You guys are the best.

I was just sitting at my desk working when I heard yelling and laughing coming from the front yard. I looked out to see the boys begging for their daddy to spray them with the hose.  I love to see how much joy a simple garden hose can bring to two little boys.  I could watch them playing like this all day.

I am so grateful that I decided to keep them out of summer camps and school this summer. We have had wonderful long lazy days filled with whatever we want to do! Well I am working, but the boys are very creative and find lots of ways to entertain themselves around the house and yard.  They just seem so happy.  We are all really enjoying a schedule free summer. No alarm clocks and no rushing around.  I am loving it!

We booked a camping trip for next month. I'm really looking forward to tubing in a river, going to a rodeo, watching fireworks over a lake, exploring caves, going for hikes, rafting, hanging out with friends, hanging out on our friends boat, having camp fires oh we have so much planned.

Feeling Better

I am so happy to report that I am feeling much better and the boys are not sick (fingers crossed they don't catch the stomach bug Freddy and I had).  We got sick a few hours after going out to the pier for dinner. We weren't sure if it was food poisoning or a stomach bug. But after hearing that everyone around town and most of the kids from Brady's class are all down with the same bug we decided it wasn't food poisoning. But I think next time we go to the pier we'll stick to drinks instead of food, just to be safe.

Brady missed his graduation ceremony, but his teacher said we can go to school and get a picture of him in his cap & gown! I am so happy about that.  It was a tough 3 years getting him through preschool and I am so glad that I'll get to see him all dressed up with diploma in hand.

The weather looks beautiful this weekend.  I am off for a much needed day of beauty and am going to get my hair cut and highlighted. Woo Hoo.  If there is anything good that came out of the stomach bug was that I lost 6 lbs overnight. I can't complain about that.

Have a great weekend!

Super Heroes

I don't like bad people. I wish there were only good people.  I hope I raise my boys right to be good people.  I want them to have happy childhoods and be happy adults.  When I see bad things happen it makes me hold my boys closer and pray that they will grow up without the horrible tragedies.

I want them to be boys. To have fun and play outside and get dirty. I want them to be respectful of their elders.  I want them to belly laugh everyday.  I want them to be inventive and build rocket ships out of cardboard boxes and tell me stories at bedtime about dinosaurs.  I want them to have good values.

I don't expect them to have straight A's in school or become doctors... unless that is what they want (I'll push the A's but settle for hard work).  I want them to find jobs doing what they love. Maybe it will be working on the farm or making movies. I just want them to be good people.  For now I'll let them dream of being super heroes because the world needs super heroes right?

Here is a little Super Hero Video starring Tiny Terror and Brady

Darn Hawks

Since hawks had decided to kill all my yard birds I decided I didn't like them anymore and I wasn't going to take their pictures.  But we have been hawk incident free for several months so when I saw this one at Allaire State Park today I decided I could take it's picture.  It stared me down and I tried to warn it that the branch it was sitting on was about to break and I would have laughed if it did.

While we were there was also took a train ride. The train wasn't going to leave for ten minutes. I wanted to get a cute picture of the boys sitting on the train while were were waiting. I told them to stay in their seats I was going to take a picture and then get right back on the train.  They totally panicked.  Clearly they thought I was leaving them forever.

I'm back on the train and the kids are happy again.

Tiny... ugg.

We've taken the train ride many times, but this was the first time we took it with a tour guide. He had a bunch of fun stories to share. Like how one of the trains they have there used to be owned by someone else and it had things stolen off it like the bell.  Shortly after the robbery the missing items from the train were posted on Ebay for sale specifying the exact train they were stolen it from.  As my father would say, "stupid, stupid, stupid."  The thief was apprehended and the missing parts were returned to the train.

Time to collect tickets.

Time to play in the Spring weather! Finally!!!

Allaire State Park is a great place for me to take people to do portraits.  I like to test out different lighting and backgrounds.  The boys are happy to help by making funny faces for me.  Clearly the lighting wasn't going to work, but the boys were so co-operative I couldn't resist posting their shots.

We also played "What did Purple Debbie Take Pictures Of".  I saw on Debbie's FB timeline she was at the same park earlier that day. So the kids pointed out lots of exciting things they though she took pictures of.

It was a beautiful day to get outside and play!  Well at least do farm chores in the morning, then get out to play.  I am loving this weather!
