Briar Rose Penny Infinity Scarf Winter KAL

Briar Rose is using my Penny Infinity Scarf pattern for their Winter KAL on Raverly.
I really loved working with Briar Rose's Sea Pearl yarn and I'm excited to see all the different versions of my pattern with their yarns.

I have been wearing my Penny Infinity Scarf so much and I am very impressed with how well the yarn is holding up.  It honestly looks like I've never worn it (but I can assure you I have worn it tons).

Yarn Along Gift Knitting

After seeing Melissa's version of my Penny Infinity Scarf in Tosh Merino Light I knew I had to make a version in the Tosh Light. Also I have had a flood of people asking me if they can modify the pattern to work with a skein that is 420 yards.

This version I modified the pattern by removing one of the repeats in the center panel. When I was done with the scarf I had 31 extra yards of yarn.

This scarf is going to be gifted. I'm not saying to who because that would just spoil the Christmas surprise.

Also on my needles is a Wurm Hat. I am using Fable Fibers Novel Yarn in the colorways Amelie & Fairy Garden. I am loving this yarn. I really love the colors Fable Fibers offers and I love the feel of the yarn and also how it knits up. It is a merino, cashmere, nylon blend and it is a joy to work with.  This will also be a gift. I had casted it on my needles when we went up to NY for Thanksgiving, but because of all the traffic mixed with car sickness I didn't get to work on it. I sat down last night and this is how far I got! I haven't done many small projects in a while and it is so fun to see something coming along so fast!

I haven't been doing as much spinning lately as I would like to, but I have gotten some merino spun up. I love the color of it and I'm sure I'll be knitting it up into a gift soon.

Happy knitting!

ps- if you need some motivation to get you going on gift knitting you might want to check out my favorite Ravelry Group "My Sister's Knitter". Andi is hosting a Holiday Gift Knitting / Crocheting KAL. You can swing by and read the rules. I really enjoy this group.

Creeper Hat & Some WIPs

Tiny requested a Creeper Hat. If you aren't familiar with Minecraft then you won't know what a creeper is. If you are familiar with Minecraft you can imagine how popular Tiny is with his new Creeper Hat.

Tiny went with me to the yarn store and picked the yarn out himself. Of course he picked Madelintosh. Tiny has very good taste in yarn. I started the hat with just two colors, but I decided to add the light gray to break up all the black in the creeper face.

Here is the yarn I used and you can see the amounts I had left over above the hat in the picture above.

Tiny requested a long hat with a pom pom.

I've made many pom poms before, but I've heard people talk about Stephen West's video tutorial on how to make a pom pom "Pom Pom It". I watched it and got the biggest kick out of it. I highly recommend watching it for amusement. He is a funny man.

Tiny is very happy with his hat and wears it! Gotta love that.

I casted on another Penny Infinity Scarf. This time I am using a skein of Tosh Merino Light in the colorway Calligraphy. I want to see if I can make a Penny Infinity Scarf using only one skein. I used my yardage counter when I winded my yarn and it came up with a total of 498 yards in the skein. The tag says the skein is 420 yards. So we'll see how it works out. I'm running the yarn through the counter as I knit it so I can figure out where I can cut down yardage if needed to make it work for one skein. I am loving the color and I really hope it all works out.

This is my mindless knitting project. It is going to be a long scarf / infinity scarf. I'm using an alpaca / merino blend and mixing up the colors as I go. I am working on US2 needles and just knitting around and around. I keep this in my car and work on it at the bus stop, gas station, doctors office basically any time I'm waiting. But after seeing Lori's Favorite Things Scarf. I am so tempted to start adding some fun decorations in it. At the rate I'm going it might get done in about 5 years.

I have another design with alpaca dk yarn on my needles right now, but I'm not going to give up too much info on it just yet. Just a little tease.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We will be doing a lot of driving tomorrow. Which means lots of knitting in the car! I love that. We have some crummy weather here on the East Coast so for everyone that is traveling be safe and watch out for black ice.

The Penny Infinity Scarf

I published a knitting pattern!

Meet the "Penny Infinity Scarf". Modeled by my beautiful friend Ryan. Not only does she look great in hand knits she also knits and is part of my knitting group. I'm very lucky to have such a great group of friends that get together to knit and crochet.

When I started knitting my grandmother taught me how to do garter ridge. I picked up The Knitting Directory at Barnes and Noble and taught myself how to do the rest.  Back when I started in about 1997 there were only a few local yarn stores to get yarn at. I started discovering good yarn, but not many patterns. I would use the Knitting Directory and come up with pattern repeats and make scarves, blankets and I even figured out how to knit in a round.

Most of the local yarn stores closed by us and getting good yarn wasn't easy.  I knitted a lot of blankets and long term projects for a while. Then when I had the kids 17 month apart my knitting slowed down a lot.

When my parents started looking at getting alpacas I took a trip with them to one of the farms. I walked into their little farm store. The entire wall was filled with alpaca yarn from their farm. I held a skein in my hand and the incredible bug to get knitting again wasn't going away.

I started knitting again. I once again was working on my own patterns. Each unique and of course I rarely kept notes.  I gifted just about every project.  Then when my parents opened their farm store I started selling my hand knits.

I started a blog and joined up with Ginny's Yarn Along and the rest is history. I have become a knitting junkie. I just have to have something to post for Wednesday yarn along each week right?! Ginny's Yarn Along keeps me so motivated to keep knitting.

Many yarn stores have opened up around us again and now I have lots of good yarn to buy. Not to mention we harvest our own yarn at the alpaca farm.  So with the combination of good yarn and Raverly there seems to be no end!  Also I have to add all the amazing people and groups I am now involved with. I love knitting and it isn't going away anytime soon.

When I started knitting patterns weren't at your finger tips like they are now.  With Raverly I can see something and just buy it, print it and start knitting. How can knitting not be additive!
I've had a huge urge to get back into doing my own designs.  I've been doing a lot of test knitting, but I really wanted to get back into designing my own knits.

So when I needed to make an infinity scarf for my cousin and I couldn't find a pattern I liked I decided I finally had an excuse to get back into making my own patterns up. I used some stitches I've done in the past and put them together to make the infinity scarves you see in the pictures above. There are actually two scarves. The first four pictures are made with Fable Fiber Yarn and the last four pictures are with Briar Rose Yarn. The color ways are very close.

I wanted to design an infinity scarf that anyone could wear. I wanted it to be pretty and have a lace pattern and eyelets. I wanted it to be easy to knit also. This pattern is worked over 3 stitch repeats and 9 stitch repeats and ever other row of plain knitting.  I came up with what you see in the pictures above. I am very happy with how it turned out.  I have to give a huge thank you to my sister for doing the design work on the pattern. Also a huge thanks to Melissa for testing it for me and if it wasn't for her I am not sure I would have the ever gotten this pattern published. She gave me the push I needed.

So with the motivation and help from some friends I've published

Now back to the drawing board.

My books of choice these days are "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" by Barbara G. Walker &
of course Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac.  Endless knitting possibilities!!!

I am also reading "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton and I am really enjoying it.
